“GOLD STANDARD” CHARTERED BANKER BREAKS NEW GROUND

Thanks to a unique partnership between City College Norwich and the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland (CIOBS), the CIOBS Chartered Banker qualification is set to become more widely available throughout the UK.

City College Norwich has used its status as an Awarding Organisation to get Chartered Banker and other qualifications of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland (CIOBS) available in Norfolk and elsewhere in the UK thanks to a partnership between City College and CIOBS.

The Chartered Banker programme is a qualification for professional people who aspire to management and senior management positions in banking and financial services. It provides the ‘skill-set' relevant to the individual's chosen career path and entitles them to use the designation 'Chartered Banker'. CIOBS is the only organisation that can confer the designation Chartered Banker on its members.

City College Norwich is the first college in the country to have gained awarding organisation status. The Chartered Banker is the second qualification the College has entered onto the qualifications framework, having previously developed an Introduction to Financial Services course for new recruits to the sector.

City College Norwich Principal, Dick Palmer said: “City College Norwich's awarding organisation status has enabled us to work with CIOBS to accredit Chartered Banker within the qualifications framework for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This respected professional qualification, and all of the units within it, is now fully transferable within the qualifications structure across the whole of the UK. The benefit of this for individual employees, as well as their employers, is that more staff can gain units towards the full qualification in the knowledge that each unit is nationally accredited”.

CIOBS Chief Executive Simon Thompson said: “While we have been providing world class professional qualifications for many years, we were delighted to be granted approval as a Credit Rating Body under the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework in 2008. We have enjoyed working with City College Norwich to have our qualifications on the QCF. This makes CIOBS the only awarding body to have its qualifications entered into the qualifications structure across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.”

The launch event will provide an opportunity to learn more about the CIOBS Chartered Banker qualification and how it will be delivered by City College Norwich. The College's Business School based at the National Skills Academy for Financial Services will be delivering the qualification in innovative new ways, combining distance learning and more traditional teaching methods, to a wide range of financial services sector employees in the region.

CityCollege Norwich Qualifications

City College Norwich was the first FE College in the country to gain Awarding Organisation Status. As well as devising qualifications in consultation with employers, sector skills councils and professional bodies, the College can also accredit high quality training provided by employers to give them nationally recognised qualifications.

Organisations wishing to develop or accredit their own qualifications receive support from the College as we work together. Employees get nationally recognised qualifications; employers get a more motivated, better trained, more productive workforce and working together we can address regional and national skills gaps.

The College was awarded this status by the QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority) in April 2008. Since then the government has split the QCA into the QCDA (Qualifications and Curriculum Development Authority), which controls the national Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) within which all our qualifications sit, and Ofqual, which is the regulatory authority. The QCF provides a flexible route to the creation of customised awards which have nationally recognised status.
