Change of Regional Director for our National Skills Academy
There is to be a new Regional Director of the National Skills Academy for Financial Services for the East of England with John Carter taking over from John Brierley this autumn.
John Brierley is retiring from a role which he started in 2006. John worked with City College Norwich to establish the Academy which opened at St Andrew's House in 2007.
Since then he has overseen the establishment and development of the regional board which now includes members from financial companies based in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Peterborough and a network of providers in the region.
Working with interim Chairman Simon Leeming of Virgin Money, he has been focussing on reviewing the training and skills needs of businesses and how those needs are met by training which is supported and promoted by the Academy.
But his association with Fig goes back much further. Previously Executive Director for Norfolk of the Learning and Skills Council, he supported Fig's initiative in 2001 to bring back financial industry courses at City College, Norwich, after an absence of more than a decade.
He also helped with Fig's work with City College in creating the first foundation degree in financial services in the UK, something that is ongoing and still supported by industry.
John Brierley will continue to work for the Academy on a consultancy basis in support of the new Regional Director.
His successor is no stranger to the Academy and hopes to slot smoothly into his new role as Regional Director.
Over the past year John Carter has undertaken extensive project management work for the Academy, both in the Eastern region and nationally.
As one-time Head of Learning and Communication at Marsh, where he worked for 25 years, he is already widely known across the industry.
“I'm sure my background knowledge and existing experience with the Academy will be invaluable in my new role,” he said. “I know John Brierley will be a difficult act to follow and I'm grateful that he will continue to work one day a week and will give any support I may ask for.”
The next issue of the Gazette will include a report on the thoughts and aims of John Carter in his new role as Academy Regional Director.
